Last Night the Moon

By John R. Cornwall

Last night the moon
Seemed awkward
In a semi-summer sky,
Yet bright still, like
A remarkable thought.

I listened to Beethoven,
Watched through the window
The sharp shifting of shadows
On the night flowers,
Tight shut until the embryo
Of morning arcs in.

Then turning, I turned up
The last movement of the 9th,
Shut tight my eyes like night flowers
And let the mind draw back,
Then wondered how many others
In this night would see
An awkward moon
And the shadows
On the night flowers
Then sit at their tables
And note such things down.
