Sun lights the morning
with mild warmth when I gather the dogs
and go outside to feed the chickens.
Fava plants open blossoms like butterflies,
pink and white with velvet black tongues
offering a faint lilac scent when I bend close.

New to this place, I hear a crash
and see my neighbor loading his recycle bin
hidden from the street. Face set to his work
he doesn’t see me at the kitchen sink
waiting for songbirds in the boundary trees.
