The Mastery of Light

By Chet Corey

1
Light allowed in
through a dormer window.

Its insistence of radiance
fills the corner of the room,
back wall, stiff wimple.

The water in the jug
of no importance–

Vermeer’s window light
watering all.

2
That translucence of glass
Manet achieves in White Lilacs!

Late in life,
his single flower in a crystal vase.

3
Iconic photographs of Jacqueline
and Coretta Scott King–
grief racked behind each veiled face.

And yet light let in.
